1739 – English preacher George Whitefield wrote in a letter on this date: ‘I am no friend to sinless perfection. I believe the existence (though not the dominion) of sin remains in the hearts of the greatest believers.’

1858 – Presbyterian pastor Maltbie D. Babcock was born today.  He is best known as the author of the hymn, "This is My Father’s World."

This is my Father’s world, and to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings the music of the spheres.
This is my Father’s world: I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas;
His hand the wonders wrought.

This is my Father’s world, the birds their carols raise,
The morning light, the lily white, declare their Maker’s praise.
This is my Father’s world: He shines in all that’s fair;
In the rustling grass I hear Him pass;
He speaks to me everywhere.

2008 – Nobel Prize-winning Russian author Alexander Solzhenitsyn died at age 89.  A couple of his quotes follow.

“Pride grows in the human heart like lard on a pig.”

“If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?”
