Morning and Shadows

“You can only come to the morning through the shadows.” – J.R.R. Tolkien

  1. I realize this is old now, but I just can’t resist leaping upon a conversation about Tolkien.

The man was such a genius. Maybe not in all aspects of life, but my heart will always be attached to him. One foot here, one foot in Middle-Earth. I think I was lucky enough to read The Hobbit, and then The Lord of the Rings, at just the right time in childhood, it did the most good for me.

I have this theory (unproven, untested, of course) that the reader of Tolkien grows up through the narrative of the story (regardless of the reader’s current age). Start as a child, become increasingly aware of how big and scary the world is through steps, until all the responsibility is finally upon you. And then you can go back home, but there is disillusionment and also something more due to maturity.

I’m rambling, hope the essence leaks through…

    1. Andrew,

Like you, I think I read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings at exactly the right time in my childhood/adolescence, and I agree that the man was a genius. I like your theory, btw, and see how it fits perfectly with his work, given that he wrote The Hobbit as a story for children, and then went further and deeper with LOTR.
