On this day in 1530, King Henry VIII‘s divorce request is denied by the Pope.  Subsequently, Henry declares that he, not the Pope, is supreme head of England’s church.  The Church of England is thus born.  Needless to say, this has got to be one of the worst reasons for founding a church ever.

The Finnish Senate accepts universal suffrage on this day in 1906, except for the poor.  For some reason I do not think “universal” means what the Finnish Senate thought it meant.

Cincinnati Mayor Mark Breith stood before his city council on this day in 1908 and announced that, "Women are not physically fit to operate automobiles."  No comment.
