I agree that it is also criminal for gifted lay teachers to not be used, but I would still say that one of the essential tasks of pastors is to teach, even if it is just the leaders of the church (good luck with making that happen, since I;ve had little luck in that area).

Of course, my advice is primarily for those who are full-time pastors, and as we have discussed before, the list of essential taks for part-time pastors depends upon the number of hours they are employed by the local church. For those with fewer than twenty hours as week, the list, in my opinion, would be limited to two primary taks: sermon/worship prepration and visitation of the shut-ins/sick.

I'm not sure I'd call it criminal not to teach in your church. What's criminal is that there are plenty of churches out there with spiritually gifted teachers sitting unused in the pews. I won't be teaching this coming year and the reason is that we have two excellent (adult) teachers in our congregation of 50 persons, plus since I'm part time I can't teach as well as spend the 15 hours I'm supposed to be spending on worship and sermon prep. 8-|

In general your list is awesome as long you're in a full time position, but as a part timer it makes my eyes glaze over.
