Tombstone – Woman with Tablet

As always, click on the pics to see and download (if you want) larger versions of each.  Also, if anyone knows German, I would love to know what the tablet the woman is holding says.

  1. I put what words I could completely see into Babelfish, and this is what it generated:

    probably tons of the life noth nevertheless schauert live before death — to live sees the dark hand, which… it offered bright cup

    I think Babelfish is simply a word-by-word translator, so doesn’t deal with idioms and such. Maybe a German speaker can do better…

  2. The inscription if the first 2 stanzas of a poem by Goethe:

    “Truly death ends life’s need,
    Yet shudders life ‘fore death;
    Life sees the dark hand,
    Not the bright chalice she offers.”

    1. Thanks for the translation, Larry!
