When I Was 18 . . .

John of Locusts & Honey recently posted a meme that Jeff the Baptist brought to his attention.   It has to do with the best song that playing on the radio when you were 18 years old.  For me, the year was 1979 and the song was “Take the Long Way Home” by Supertramp.  I loved the song (and the album) then, but as I have grown older, the appeal of “Long Way Home” has become even greater.  It is a song that speaks to me on many different levels.

In the following brief video, Roger Hodgson tells the story behind the song, which is from their 1979 album, “Breakfast in America.”

After searching for a video of the song with suitable sound quality, this one, which features scenes from the movie The Truman Show, proved to be best.

  1. I ended up buying Supertramp’s Greatest Hits on iTunes as a result of this entry.

I don’t particularly love the style of the music, but I find myself really attracted to the lyrics of several songs beside this one, particularly “The Logical Song.”

    Thanks
