I recently sent a link to my friend Jim highlighting the fact that one of my favorite writers, Orson Scott Card, ranked Silverado (one of Jim’s favorite movies) as number five on his list of all time favorites. Since doing that, and after considering that I write an occasional movie review here, I thought it would be prudent to list my top 5 films. I begin, unlike many such lists at number 1 (I don’t want the tension to increase as I unveil my choices : )
Unforgiven

Clint Eastwood has only gotten better as he has aged (I also loved Million Dollar Baby, though it does not make my top 5). Superb performances by Eastwood and Morgan Freeman highlight this tale of William Munny, who is described thusly at the beginning of the film: “He was a thief and a murderer, a man of notoriously vicious and intemperate disposition.” As the film progresses you discover just what that means. “I’ve killed women and children,” Munny says at one point, “I’ve killed just about everything that walks or crawls.” And he has – whether its robbing trains or shooting US Marshalls, Munny has done it all. He is, in the words of another, “as cold as the snow, with no weak nerve or fear.” One thing, however, that Munny has never done is experience forgiveness. A wonderful and haunting film. Here is a quote from the film (courtesy of IMDB):
Bill Munny: Hell of a thing, killin’ a man. Take away all he’s got and all he’s ever gonna have.
The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess he had it comin’.
Bill Munny: We all got it comin’, kid.
